Background: The Suzuya was launched on November 20, 1934 at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal in the presence of Emperor Hirohito. She was completed in January 1936, but was placed in reserve immediately after completion, awaiting dry dock space to be rebuilt and modified in the light of the experience gained during Mogami trials to strengthen her welds and add bulges to the hull to reduce weight. She officially entered service on October 31, 1937; However, she did not enter active duty and immediately returned to dry dock for refit work, and these upgrades were completed on September 30, 1939, when she was assigned to the Kure Naval District along with her sister ships Mogami, Mikuma, and Kumano as the 7th Cruiser Division of the Japanese Navy's Second Fleet. Dispatched on 23 January 1941 as part of a show of force after the Battle of Koh Chang in the Franco-Thai War, she participated in the occupation of Cochinchina from her forward operating base in Hainan in July 1941 after an understanding had been reached between the Japanese and Vichy French authorities on the use of air facilities and ports. Participated in the Indian Ocean Raid, the Battle of Midway, Operation in the Solomon Islands, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The Suzuya was removed from the Navy list on December 20, 1944. Although the wreck of the Suzuya has yet to be found, it is believed to be located at about 27,600 feet (8,400 meters) of water, making it one of the deepest wrecks ever recorded.
