HMS M2 M-Class Submarine Aircraft Carrier Building Blocks

Recreate one of the most unusual experiments in early submarine aviation with the HMS M2 M-Class Submarine Aircraft Carrier Building Blocks. Designed and authorized by ModelFunShipyard, this 147-piece model is inspired by HMS M2, the sister ship of HMS M1 and a remarkable British submarine that was later converted to carry and launch a small seaplane.

Originally conceived as part of the M-class submarine monitor concept, HMS M2 was first designed around a large 12-inch (305 mm) naval gun. After HMS M1 was lost in 1925, M2 was extensively rebuilt, replacing its heavy gun with an aircraft hangar and launch system to test a completely different approach to naval reconnaissance.

From Submarine Monitor to Aircraft Carrier

HMS M2 began as a heavily armed submarine concept but was later transformed into an experimental aircraft-carrying submarine, giving it one of the most distinctive configurations of its era.

Integrated Aircraft Hangar

The converted submarine featured a dedicated hangar for a small floatplane, allowing the aircraft to be stored aboard the vessel when not in use.

Catapult Launch System

A deck-mounted catapult was used to launch the floatplane directly from the submarine, creating an innovative combination of underwater mobility and aerial reconnaissance capability.

Crane Recovery Concept

After completing its mission, the float-equipped aircraft could return to the water and be lifted back aboard using a crane, forming part of the experimental operating system.

Compact Historic Naval Model

With 147 pieces, the model provides a quick and accessible build while preserving the unusual silhouette and aviation features that distinguish HMS M2 from conventional submarines.
