In early 1965, Shelby announced the release of the Cobra II equipped with a 427 cubic inch V-8 engine, replacing the 289. In June of that year, at Le Mans, two rear-engine GT prototypes debuted, featuring the large 427 engine instead of the 289. Europeans booed this bulky, immature V-8 engine with its pushrods and single four-barrel carburetor. A year later, the Ford 427 dominated the French classic race, taking the top three spots, with Shelby's two cars finishing the last lap side by side for first place.
- The GT-500 was a car for adults. Shelby's Mustang made great strides in three years—growing from adolescence to maturity. The '65 GT 350 was a car for the hardcore enthusiast—a wild Mustang, as thrilling to drive as the Maserati 300S, and with a comparable market value.
