TheThirdModel created MOC-123850 around the goal of reproducing the major systems of a tunnel boring machine through a single interconnected mechanical drivetrain.
The design combines cutter-head rotation, material extraction, crawling movement, and truck loading into one functional engineering model. The gearbox also allows the cutter head and conveyor to reverse direction, which can help clear small obstructions in the mechanism.
Builder-Tested Mechanical Design
Feedback from builders highlights the smooth synchronization between the driven wheels and linear actuators, the large gear reduction used to achieve slow movement, and the functionality of the side-dumping truck. Builders have also noted that the model performs best on a smooth, level surface.
