Background:

Mûmakil (referred to as Oliphaunts in the West) are large elephant-like creatures often used in battle by the Haradrim. Oliphaunt is their given name. During the war, fierce warriors, summoned by the Dark Lord, marched north to Gondor, bringing these massive creatures as war beasts. Draped in red banners and adorned with belts and ornaments made of gold and copper, they carried giant war towers on their backs from which archers and spearmen could fight. Naturally bloodthirsty, they trampled many enemies beneath their feet. With their trunks, they struck down many foes, and their tusks were stained with the blood of enemies. Cavalry couldn’t fight them effectively as horses refused to approach, and infantry fared no better, being quickly crushed or shot from above. In battle, they often stood like impregnable towers; shield walls were broken before them, and armies were shattered in their wake.
These thick-skinned beasts were nearly impervious to weapons, but their eyes were a weak point, as Mûmakil could be blinded or even killed by powerful arrows. When blinded, they would enter a state of frenzied rage, often killing both their masters and enemies in their rampage.
