The CH-47 Chinook is a twin-rotor helicopter. The Chinook is a heavy transport helicopter and one of the helicopters with the largest load capacity in the West. The name "Chinook" comes from the Chinook people, a Native American people in Oregon and Washington states.
Chinook began developing a new twin-rotor helicopter in 1957, named V-107. Around the same time, the U.S. Army announced plans to replace the CH-37 Mojave helicopter with a new gas turbine helicopter that would use a piston engine.
