Background:

The F-104 was a single-engine, high-velocity aircraft developed in the United States as part of the well-known “Century Series.” It was originally created for daytime interception tasks and later adapted in the early 1960s into an all-weather, multi-role platform. During the Cold War period, it was widely deployed in different operational roles and was also manufactured under license in several countries, leading to extensive international service.

Known as the “Starfighter,” this aircraft featured an unconventional and highly distinctive layout. Its lifting surfaces were extremely thin, compact, and positioned further toward the rear compared with most aircraft of its era. This configuration delivered exceptional performance at very high velocity, particularly at low altitude, while resulting in limited turning capability and increased landing requirements.

The F-104 achieved several important milestones in aviation history. It was the first mass-produced aircraft capable of sustained Mach-level flight and the first to reach an altitude of 100,000 feet (30,000 meters) using only onboard propulsion. In 1958, it set world records for velocity, altitude, and climb time, becoming the first aircraft to hold all three records simultaneously. It also introduced advanced onboard systems that influenced later aircraft design.

Throughout its service life, the F-104 became known for its demanding handling characteristics, particularly during operations in Europe. Its performance profile required precise control, advanced training, and strict operational discipline.
