MOC-102185 BR 01 Deutsche Reichsbahn Vintage Steam Locomotive Building Blocks
Recreate one of Germany’s most iconic steam locomotives with the MOC-102185 BR 01 Deutsche Reichsbahn Vintage Steam Locomotive Building Blocks. Designed and authorized by langemat, this 1,913-piece model is inspired by the legendary BR 01, the first standardized express steam locomotive developed for the Deutsche Reichsbahn.
Based specifically on BR 01 2226-7 in its appearance before the 1962 reconstruction, the model captures the locomotive’s imposing black boiler, red chassis, large smoke deflectors, six oversized driving wheels, and closely coupled tender. Its substantial proportions and mechanical details bring the atmosphere of classic German steam railways to life.
A German Steam Railway Icon
The BR 01 entered service in the late 1920s and became one of the defining express steam locomotives of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. The real locomotive featured six massive driving wheels and was capable of speeds up to 120 km/h, combining power with the unmistakable appearance of the early standardized German locomotive era.
Six Oversized Driving Wheels
One of the model’s most striking features is its set of 43.2 mm driving wheels, selected to better reproduce the proportions of the real locomotive. The three large wheels on each side give the completed model the heavy, powerful stance that defines the BR 01.
Designed for Smooth Curve Running
The left and right driving wheels are mechanically decoupled, allowing each side to rotate at a different speed when cornering. This helps the locomotive negotiate standard railway curves down to R40, although reduced speed is recommended when passing through tight turnouts.
Locomotive & Tender Combination
The model recreates the traditional steam locomotive arrangement with a separate coal-and-water tender positioned closely behind the locomotive. A standard magnetic coupling connects the two sections for easier handling on a railway layout.
Ready for a Motorization Project
The standard build is designed as a non-motorized model, while the design also allows advanced builders to develop a powered version. The spacious tender provides room for different motorization systems, and additional weighted elements can be used to improve traction when operating the locomotive under power.
Impressive Display Dimensions
The completed locomotive and tender measure approximately 72.1 studs long, 8 studs wide across the main body, and 14.9 studs high.
Using standard 8 mm stud spacing, the overall dimensions are approximately:
57.7 × 7.9 × 11.9 cm
The finished model weighs approximately 1.1 kg, giving it a substantial presence on both train layouts and display shelves.
From the Designer
langemat completely revised the BR 01 design in 2022, including a newly developed boiler and repositioned driving wheels to improve both appearance and running behavior.
Particular attention was given to the locomotive’s handling on tight railway curves. By allowing the large wheels on the left and right sides to rotate independently, the designer achieved noticeably smoother cornering while preserving the characteristic oversized driving-wheel proportions of the real BR 01.
A Centerpiece for Classic Railway Collections
With 1,913 pieces, six oversized driving wheels, a separate tender, and a design inspired by one of Germany’s most famous steam locomotives, this model makes an impressive centerpiece for steam railway enthusiasts, European train collectors, and builders creating detailed historic railway layouts.
